Banks in Japan
There are many types of bank in Japan.
If you would walk around any places nearby station, you can find ”銀行” which means the Bank.
The popular bank for foreigners is “Yucho” Japan Post Bank. Other major banks also canbe accept foreginers.
In Japan, the people who stay in Japan within 6 months is categorized as “non-resident”. Generally non-resident cannnot opening bank account. However, this rule depends on each banks’ operation. Some of banks accepts the foreigners who stay in Japan within 6 months.
Before your visiting the Bank’s outlets, you must prepare some required documents.
Required documents for account opening
For foreigners, the Banks request your Residence Card. Your resident address shall be filled at back side of the Residence Card. After entering Japan, you can go to the city hall/city office for fixing your resident address. At that time, your address is written at back side of Residence Card. If the Residence Card without this address, it is not acceptable for the bank.
At city hall, you can request to issue the certificate of residence (“住民票”). This certificate also is required to open the bank account.
You have to bring “Hanko” (seal). In Japan, most of document processes require “Hanko” for confirmation. The signature could be acceptable at a few banks. However, Hanko is usually required.
Online application
If you are facing difficalties in communicating with Banks’ clark in English, you can consider use online application for account opening.
There are some “internet bank” in Japan. All process for account opening are completed at website. Most of these banks prepare English pages for foreigners.
You can fill-out the form of application, then upload IDs (Residence Card with address, certificate of residence etc). After then, the banks starts the internal process. If the bank is ok for opening your account, a starting kit will be sent to your residence address. You may activate the cash card/debit card in accordance with the instruction of starting guide. The process in details are different by each bank.
